It depends on what you do and what your level of fitness is.

For an untrained person, 1 set of push-ups will be useful for muscle growth. For the more trained, such a load is not enough.

You can read on the Internet about the Mike Mentzer method. The bottom line is to do 1 set at maximum intensity to the deepest failure. And after such an approach, you may have to take a break from training for up to 2 weeks.

Therefore, yes, they are effective, you just need to choose the right level of load and its intensity so that it is sufficient, but not redundant.

If you are a beginner, muscle growth will only occur until a certain stage. When will growth end? It all depends on how long you can progress with increasing intensity. Anyway, sooner or later, your muscles will get used to such a load and you will have to pick up dumbbells, weights, a barbell and use the standard scheme of 3-4 sets of 6-8 reps.

Still, if there is no opportunity to work with weights, but want to gain weight, increase the training time from 10-15 to 30-40 minutes, and reduce the frequency of exercises to 3-4 per week, working out 2-3 muscle groups per day. By doing this, you will achieve a better return from the nervous system (according to the principle, the more stress, the more powerful the release of the corresponding hormones), then better recovery on rest days, and, accordingly, better growth in the first stage of home workouts.
